Packet Tracer video tutorial – Connect two Switches with a Router

This post serve as the Exercise 2 for "Interface Overview", the lesson 1 of my packet tracer video tutorial series.

In Exercise 1, we have learned how to set up the basic home LAN by connecting PCs with switch or hub, now we will go one step future -- we will inter-connect two LANs with a Router. While hubs and switches connect pcs within a network. routers are the crucial devices that let messages flow between networks. This post is an disambiguation about hub, switch and router.

Step 1, we set up the network topology with the following devices:

1 Generic Router (Router-PT)

2 2950-24 switches

5 Generic End Devices (PC-PT)

Step 2, the devices are connected with Copper Straight Through connections.

Step 3, Turn on Router interface FastEthernet0/0 and FastEthernet1/0.

Double Click the Router -> Click the Config tab -> Select FastEthernet0/0 under INTERFACE -> Check Port Status "On"

Do the same thing for FastEthernet1/0.

Step 4, Set IP address for Router interface FastEthernet0/0 and FastEthernet1/0.

Double Click the Router -> Click the Config tab -> Select FastEthernet0/0 under INTERFACE -> Input "192.168.1.1" in the IP Address text box -> Click Subnet Mask text box, the subnet mask will be auto-filled.

Do the same thing for FastEthernet1/0, except Inputing "172.16.1.1" in the IP Address text box.

Step 5, Set the Default Gateway and IP address for the PCs.

Double Click a PC-> Click the Config tab -> Select FastEthernet0/0 under INTERFACE -> Input "192.168.1.1" in the Gateway text box -> Select FastEthernet under INTERFACE -> Input "192.168.1.2" in the IP Address text box -> Click Subnet Mask text box, the subnet mask will be auto-filled.

Do the same thing for the other PCs, change Gateway IP and IP Addresses accordingly.

Step 6, Shift to Simulation Mode. Press Edit Filters -> turn off all other packages except ARP and ICMP -> Press Auto Capture/Play and enjoy the show.
